Fasnachtler: Behind the Mask (Feature) - In Development

Why would an entire city organise its year around three days?

”Fasnachtler” follows the people who dedicate their lives to carrying forward traditions that shape— and are shaped by—these

"Three Most Wonderful Days".

At the fourth chime of the bell on a cold Monday morning before Lent, the normally reserved city of
Basel, Switzerland disappears into darkness.

Masked figures flood the streets, huge lanterns are unveiled, and the sound of booming drums and piercing fifes echoes throughout the city.

For 72 hours, Basel is transformed by a shared hysteria known as

FASNACHT

Yet Fasnacht is far more than a festival. It is the cultural heartbeat of Basel, shaped by more than 300 years of tradition and sustained by the people who couldn't imagine life without it. Generations of ‘Fasnachtler’ spend much of the year rehearsing, making masks, hand painting lanterns and diligently preparing for the next festival.

For many, Fasnacht is not simply an event but a way of life, “a virus” that spreads excitement and joy that is vital to the wellbeing of the city itself.

“Fasnachtler: Behind the Mask” follows the people who keep this extraordinary tradition alive.

“Fasnachtler” is in development to begin production Spring/Summer 2027.
We’re currently talking to potential Swiss and UK production partners for an international co-production and pursuing financing.
